about-us-missionNobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank, and of more than 50 companies, in Bangladesh, each aiming at addressing a specific social problem, father of microcredit and the concept of social business, which are now being implemented all around the world. Professor Muhammad Yunus is the recipient of more than 50 honorary degrees from universities across 20 countries. He has received 112 awards from 26 countries including state honours from 10 countries. Professor Yunus was the 2006 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize together with Grameen Bank. Other notable awards include the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1984), World Food Prize (1994), International Simon Bolivar Prize (1996), Sydney Peace Prize (1998) and Seoul Peace Prize (2006). He is one of seven individuals to have received the Nobel Peace Prize, the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom and the United States Congressional Gold Medal. For his constant innovation and enterprise, the Fortune Magazine named Professor Yunus in March 2012 as “one of 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time.

Professor Latifee is the Managing Director of Grameen Trust, which has implemented more than 150 Grameen replication programs in 40 countries.

He is well known for his contribution in the field of microfinance, poverty alleviation, financial inclusion, social business and value building growth. He has been associated with Professor Muhammad Yunus since the inception of Grameen Bank. He serves as Member of a number of Board of Directors at home and abroad including GAI in U.S.A, GC in Mexico, GAC in Colombia, KGMAMF in Kosovo, GCAMF in Luxembourg, NUBL in Nepal, MIG in India and GMCCs in China.

Nurjahan Begum was one of the earliest associates of Professor Muhammad Yunus when he founded the bank. She served as Deputy Managing Director of the bank and also as Acting Managing Director. She worked as the General Manager, Training & International Program of Grameen. She is currently the Managing Director of Grameen Shikkha in a voluntary capacity.

Mr. Shaikh Abdud Daiyan

Mr. Shaikh Abdul Daiyan

Mr. Shaikh Abdud Daiyan is one of the founding members of Grameen Bank. Over the past 35 years he has served in leadership positions in several Grameen organizations. He served in Grameen Bank for 20 years and retired as the General Manager. Mr. Daiyan was the Project Coordinator (health) of the research project of John Hopkins University, financed by National Institute of Health (NIH), USA. He also worked for International Labor Organization (ILO). Mr. Daiyan has presented papers as keynote speaker at various national and international conferences, seminars, symposiums and workshops on different issues which include micro credit and sustainable health care system. He is currently the Managing Director of Grameen Fund, a social venture capital finance organization.

Mohammad Shahjahan began his career at Grameen Bank in 1984. He is currently Acting Managing Director and Head of the Accounts, Finance, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Division of Grameen Bank. He is also member of the Board of several companies of the Grameen family.These companies work in the fields of agriculture, welfare, renewable energy, telecommunications, venture capital and investment banking.
Mohammad Shahjahan obtained an accounting diploma (B. Com) with honors from the University of Dhaka in 1976, as well as a Master’s degree in Accounting and a Master’s degree in Finance from the same university, in 1977 and 1981 respectively.

Ms. Rokia Afzal Rahman started her career in a commercial bank in 1962 when very few women had entered banks universally. She became the first woman bank manager of the country in 1964. She later became a sponsor Director in Midas Financing Limited, Director in Reliance Insurance Ltd. Mrs. Rahman served as a Director in the Central Bank of Bangladesh as a member of the board for three years. Mrs. Rahman is the Chairperson of Presidency University foundation and Chair, Bangladesh Board of Advisers, Asian University for Women.

Ms. Rokia Afzal Rahman is a former Adviser (minister) to the Government of Bangladesh in charge of the ministry of Women and Children, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of Social Welfare and Ministry of Culture.

Professor A.M.M. Safiullah was born in Mymensingh, Bangladesh and had his early education in Chittagong (the then East Pakistan Cadet College, now Faujderhat Cadet College). He obtained the B.Sc. (Engg.), Civil, degree in 1969 and M.Sc. Engineering Degree (Geotechnical Engineering) in 1977 from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology, Dhaka, and Ph.D. degree from University of Strathclyde in 1981 under a Commonwealth Scholarship.

After graduation Dr. Safiullah worked in a local Consulting Engineering firm and then joined the Design Directorate of the Water Development Board in 1971. He joined the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) as a Lecturer in Civil Engineering in 1973 and was appointed a Professor of Civil Engineering in 1984. He was Head of the Dept. of Civil Engineering (1993-95), Dean of the Faculty (1998-2000, 2001), Director, Planning and Development (1989-1993), Project Manager, University of Alberta-BUET Institutional Linkage Project (1989-93), Director, Directorate of Continuing Education at BUET (1995-2000). In August 2006 he was appointed as the 10th Vice Chancellor of BUET, a post he continued till August 2010.

Md. Ashraful Hassan joined Grameen Bank in 1984 where he worked closely with Peace Nobel Laureate Professor Yunus. Currently he serves as Managing Director of Grameen Telecom, which is engaged in promoting and providing easy access to GSM Cellular services in rural Bangladesh. He also serves as Managing Director of Grameen Knitwear Ltd., Grameen Distribution Ltd., Grameen Fabrics & Fashions Ltd. and CEO of Grameen Telecom Trust.

Out of these five companies, two are Social Businesses related to textile, trading and manufacturing. He has diversified knowledge in different sectors having had wide exposure to industrial management, export market, labour management, trading and manufacturing. Mr. Hassan also acquired a wide range of experiences in project development and start-up projects including in social business projects.

During his tenure with the Bank, he held various key positions including, Chief of Engineering Section. He has gained extensive knowledge in the field of construction engineering and extended notable contribution for the infrastructural development of Grameen Bank.

He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of several enterprises that play commendable roles in the fields of renewable energy, health care, food and nutrition and information and communication technology. He holds Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Bangladesh.
